What happens during a preventive medicine appointment?

During s wellness checkup at Seby Medical Center, a member of the clinical staff greets you and takes you to an exam room. 

The appointment may include the following:

Vital signs check

During the vital signs check portion of your appointment, a provider checks your temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and blood oxygenation, and measures your height and weight.

Medical history review

Your preventive medicine specialist reviews your personal and family medical history. They discuss your lifestyle, medications you take, and any symptoms you’re experiencing. 

Physical exam

During a physical exam, your Seby Medical Center provider evaluates your eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, and reflexes. They may complete hearing and vision screening. 

During a pelvic examination in women, they swab the cervix to screen for signs of cervical cancer. Your provider can complete a prostate exam in men, if needed.

Diagnostic testing

Your Seby Medical Center provider may recommend you have blood tests, urine tests, or allergy testing. They might suggest an electrocardiogram (EKG), mammogram, bone density screening, skin biopsy, or other diagnostic procedure that detects or rules out medical problems.

Will I need treatment?

Preventive medicine doesn’t necessarily involve treatment. Your doctor may recommend you eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, keep stress levels low, and take dietary supplements.
