Heart Disease Q & A

What is heart disease?

Heart disease is a general term for conditions that affect your cardiovascular system. Heart disease kills one in four adults in the United States every year. Around half of all Americans have multiple risk factors for heart disease.

Heart disease includes common conditions such as:

  • High blood pressure, also called hypertension (HTN)
  • High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia)
  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Structural and valvular disease
  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)

The most common heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which places you at significant risk for heart attack, stroke, and early death. Dr. Joseph and Dr. Vyas specialize in cardiology and heart disease management. If you already have heart disease or are at high risk for developing it, it’s essential to your health to seek quality preventive care.

Who is at risk for heart disease?

Some risk factors associated with heart disease are irreversible and can't be changed, such as African American heritage, male gender, and family history of heart disease. Other factors are reversible and, with proper management, could lower your risks for heart disease or complications.

Reversible risk factors may include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Uncontrolled Type 1 diabetes
  • Being overweight or obese
  • An unhealthy diet
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Recreational drug use
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Stress and anxiety

A critical factor in preventing heart disease and complications of heart-related conditions is understanding your risk factors and committing to doing what you can to lower your risks.

What are the treatments for heart disease?

Dr. Joseph and Dr. Vyas work with you to develop a customized plan of care to lower risks for heart disease complications, such as organ failure, heart attack, and stroke.

Depending on your heart disease, they may recommend treatments such as:

  • Medications
  • Regular cardiology testing
  • Dietary changes
  • Weight loss
  • Smoking cessation
  • An exercise plan
  • Diabetes management
  • Stress management

If you have symptoms of heart disease, such as arrhythmias, blood clots, chest pain, vascular problems, poorly healing wounds, or swelling in your extremities, Dr. Vyas may recommend interventional cardiology treatments. As a cardiologist, Dr. Vyas has extensive experience and expertise in treating your heart disease using minimally invasive procedures and comprehensive, long-term management.
