Preventive Medicine Q & A

What is preventive medicine?

Preventive medicine includes evaluations, screenings, and services that reduce your risk of getting sick or developing a disease. Seeing your doctor regularly is the best way to maximize your health, detect medical problems early, and avoid costly medical complications.

Which preventive medicine services are available?

Some of the many preventive services available at Seby Medical Center include:

  • Health education
  • Medical weight loss
  • Annual wellness exams
  • Well-child visits
  • Immunizations
  • Birth control counseling
  • Medication prescriptions
  • Cholesterol and blood pressure screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Heart function tests
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing

During an annual wellness exam, your provider assesses your overall health and offers a variety of diagnostic tests to screen for medical problems. Early detection and treatment is the best way to keep you and your family healthy.

What happens during a preventive medicine appointment?

During s wellness checkup at Seby Medical Center, a member of the clinical staff greets you and takes you to an exam room.

The appointment may include the following:

Vital signs check

During the vital signs check portion of your appointment, a provider checks your temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and blood oxygenation, and measures your height and weight.

Medical history review

Your preventive medicine specialist reviews your personal and family medical history. They discuss your lifestyle, medications you take, and any symptoms you’re experiencing.

Physical exam

During a physical exam, your Seby Medical Center provider evaluates your eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, and reflexes. They may complete hearing and vision screening.

During a pelvic examination in women, they swab the cervix to screen for signs of cervical cancer. Your provider can complete a prostate exam in men, if needed.

Diagnostic testing

Your Seby Medical Center provider may recommend you have blood tests, urine tests, or allergy testing. They might suggest an electrocardiogram (EKG), mammogram, bone density screening, skin biopsy, or other diagnostic procedure that detects or rules out medical problems.

Will I need treatment?

Preventive medicine doesn’t necessarily involve treatment. Your doctor may recommend you eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, keep stress levels low, and take dietary supplements. Seby Medical Center also offers immunizations and birth control. They can also prescribe medications as needed.
