Urgent Care Q & A

What is urgent care?

Urgent care services involve immediate evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for non-life-threatening emergencies. Examples include illnesses, injuries, and new or unusual symptoms. However, if the condition is life-threatening, please head to the nearest emergency room immediately or call 911.

Why might I need urgent care services?

The following conditions are medical issues that may warrant an urgent care visit:

High and lingering fevers

Minor burns or wounds

Strains or sprains

Rashes or hives

Insect or tick bites

Colds, flu, or COVID-19

Sore throat

Extreme fatigue

Dizziness

Ear or eye infections

Vomiting or diarrhea

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

When in doubt, contact us to determine whether you should schedule an urgent care visit.

What happens during an urgent care visit?

When you arrive at Seby Medical Center for an urgent care visit, compassionate staff members will greet you right away. They will get your temperature, record your weight, and check your pulse and blood pressure.

Afterwards, our attending medical provider will ask about your symptoms and medical history. The type of care you will receive during this period will depend on your illness or injury. For example, if you have a laceration, our urgent care specialist will first clean the wound and, if necessary, stitch it. If they think you may have a fracture, they will recommend an X-ray examination.

Other Urgent Care Services

If you have a sprain, our doctor will wrap it with a medical bandage; for an infection, a prescription will be written for the needed medication. If you have a sore throat or flu-like symptoms, your throat or the inside of your nose might be swabbed to test for strep, flu, or COVID-19 virus. Our specialist may also recommend blood tests, an electrocardiogram (EKG), or other diagnostic procedures to further evaluate the condition.

What are my urgent care treatment options?

Depending on your diagnosis, unique situation, and preferences, our team of urgent care experts may suggest that you take one of the following:

Rest and fluid intake

Ice, compression, and elevation

Wearing a brace

Wound care

Over-the-counter medications

Prescription medications

Further diagnostic testing

Minor surgical procedures

A tetanus booster after a laceration
